Minister cancels tour of disputed Taiping island

Minister of National Defense Michael Tsai’s (蔡明憲) planned inspection tour of remote Taiping Island in the South China Sea tomorrow has been canceled because of poor weather, Deputy Defense Minister Lin Chen-yi (林鎮夷) said yesterday. The trip may be rescheduled next week, he said.

Asked by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆) whether the ministry was aware the plans had caused concern among other countries, Lin said he had heard complaints from Philippine lawmakers, but that the ministry had not received any formal protest.

Taiwan, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei all claim sovereignty over the island, part of the Spratly Island chain.
