Minister of National Defense Michael Tsai¡¦s (½²©ú¾Ë) planned inspection tour of remote Taiping Island in the South China Sea tomorrow has been canceled because of poor weather, Deputy Defense Minister Lin Chen-yi (ªLÂí¦i) said yesterday. The trip may be rescheduled next week, he said.
Asked by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lai Shyh-bao (¿à¤h¸¶) whether the ministry was aware the plans had caused concern among other countries, Lin said he had heard complaints from Philippine lawmakers, but that the ministry had not received any formal protest.
Taiwan, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei all claim sovereignty over the island, part of the Spratly Island chain.
