A civic group yesterday called on president-elect Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) to focus more on the environment and environmental protection once he takes office.
The Taiwan Environmental Protection Union (TEPU) said that during the KMT’s decades as the ruling party, it collected many economic achievements, but paid regrettably little attention to environmental concerns.
Hsu Kuang-jung (徐光蓉), a TEPU leader and professor at National Taiwan University, said TEPU was concerned that Ma would follow old KMT policies on the environment after he takes the helm of a new administration on May 20.
Hsu called on Ma to pursue a knowledge-based economy and promote “green” industries.
Hsu urged Ma to prioritize efforts to cut emissions and set a timetable for reaching certain reduction goals.
Hsu also suggested that the KMT use its absolute majority in the legislature to lower the voter threshold for referendums on major environmental decisions, such as the creation of new nuclear power plants.
