The Taiwan National Women's Hall will open on Saturday to coincide with the celebration of Women's Day around the world, Premier Chang Chun-hsiung (張俊雄) said yesterday.
The hall was a gift from the administration to celebrate Women's Day, Chang said, who made the announcement during a question-and-answer session at the legislature with Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Huang Sue-ying (黃淑英).
Chang also promised Huang he would support the creation of a "birth risk compensation fund" for women who suffer from complications during childbirth.
Investigations into medical disputes take years, but women who suffer from complications during labor may need financial assistance straight away, he said.
"There is an urgent need to protect women who suffer from complications during labor," Chang said, adding that he supported separating compensation for childbearing women from the issue of liability.
Minister of Health Hou Sheng-mou (侯勝茂), who also spoke during the question-and-answer session, said the government was close to completing its preparations for such a fund, but that the policy had yet to win the support of the nation's gynecologists.
"I will ask the Taiwan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology for its agreement," Hou said. "We have drawn up a policy, held four meetings and hope to establish the fund as soon as possible."
