Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) discussed their campaign platforms on education, social welfare and cross-strait relations and politics last night with students from more than 60 colleges and universities.
The forum at the Hsinchu County Auditorium was sponsored by dozens of student groups to allow the pair to discuss their policies with the younger generation, said Lee Wei-ren (李維仁), president of National Taiwan University's student association.
Because the presidential campaign has been filled with political rhetoric and smear campaigning, Lee said the forum could provide students with an opportunity to discuss public policies directly with the candidates.
The organizers had planned to invite the two men to debate their platforms, but Ma declined to attend the event at the same time as Hsieh and decided to show up at the forum two hours after Hsieh met with the students.
