I-Shou University in Kaohsiung County will set up an international school and begin to enroll foreign students for the 2009 academic year in an effort to nurture international talent and boost the university's international competitiveness.
The university is now studying what departments, courses and subjects will be covered by the school, I-Shou University president Fu Shen-li (傅勝利) said yesterday.
The international school, featuring an all-foreign language learning environment, will have all courses taught in foreign languages at the university transferred to the new school, Fu said.
"We are planning to open management classes next academic semester on a trial basis for 25 undergraduate students who will be selected from various schools that are not management schools," he said.
In light of a severe lack of nursing professionals in many Western countries, the university has also decided to set up a department of global health and international nursing, with relevant courses to be taught in foreign languages, Fu said, adding that students will also be recruited from Southeast Asian countries.
The establishment of the new school is part of the school's measures to respond to the Ministry of Education's call for the promotion of campus internationalization, which also includes holding exchanges with foreign sister-schools, encouraging students to study overseas and the creation of an international affairs division.
