    Scholarship targets US students

In an effort to attract US students to study in Taiwan, the Ministry of Education is offering scholarships to US nationals for 26 language learning centers nationwide, the nation's representative office in Washington said yesterday.

All applicants for the Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship must be Americans who are not descended from Taiwanese and who have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and possess basic Mandarin skills.

Current recipients of government scholarships and students who are already in Taiwan or who have had a government scholarship revoked in the past are not eligible.

The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of NT$25,000 for up to one year of Mandarin studies in Taiwan at an approved language program.

University students from the east coast states from Delaware south to Florida should submit their scholarship applications to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office located in Washington.

Applicants from other states can apply with the local branches of the Taiwan representative office.

Applications are being accepted until March 15. For more information, see www.moetwdc.org/English/HuayuEnrichmentScholarship.htm
