Kaohsiung crocodiles moving to improved enclosure

The crocodiles in Kaohsiung City's Shoushan Zoo -- one of which bit off the forearm of a zoo veterinarian in April -- can look forward to moving to a more comfortable living environment.

Yen Zi-cheng (顏志成), deputy director of the city government's Bureau of Economic Affairs, which supervises the zoo, said that the crocodiles would be moved to a better enclosure as part of the zoo's plans to reorganize and enhance its animal display sections following advice from animal experts.

"We will relocate animals to a more suitable space to safeguard their welfare," Yen said when asked for comment, adding that the zoo would invite Tainan crocodile expert Chiu Hsi-ho (邱錫河) to help with the relocation.

The crocodiles made the news when one of them bit off the left forearm of zoo veterinarian Chang Po-yu (張博宇).

The bureau began a thorough examination of the zoo and its animals following a request from the city government in late April, and came up with a comprehensive plan to transform the zoo.

The bureau said yesterday that the zoo also planned to improve the living space of several other animals, including the brown bears, wild bulls and vicunas.
