Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) said yesterday that southern Taiwan was the "most important area of the island" and suggested reforms that would "truly reflect its strategic importance" to the nation's development.
Wang said the southern region houses the nation's heavy industries, which he described as the "fundamental infrastructure" that supports the nation's economic development.
The south is also the nation's logistics, agricultural and fishery center, Wang said, adding that these resources should be further promoted to develop the region.
Wang made the remarks in a lecture in Pingtung County at a youth leadership camp organized by the Pingtung New Youth Service Association.
Wang also revealed plans to write a book on his ideas and proposals for what he described as "homeland replanning."
He said it was "Taiwan's loss" that former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman Lien Chan (連戰) was never elected as president, referring to Lien's plan to build "six operational centers" in the country.
The proposal was part of Lien's failed campaign for presidency in 2000.
Lien had proposed building an international airport and a logistics center in Kaohsiung, Wang said, adding that the proposals would have contributed greatly to the nation's economic advancement.
