Gangland murder has police ready for revenge killings

    By Rich Chang

Taipei police were busy trying to prevent revenge attacks yesterday after a Taipei gangster was gunned down at a dinner party in Taipei County on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred as, Tsai Tai-ting (蔡岱廷), 47, the alleged boss of a crime ring in Taipei City's Wanhua District (萬華), was eating dinner with a number of his associates.

The party, which took place on a Yonghe City (永和) street, was part of celebrations at a local temple.

Witnesses told how a masked man wearing black clothes got out of a taxi at approximately 8:45pm and walked up to Tsai's table, the police said. The masked man then pulled out a pistol and shot Tsai and two of his fellow diners.

    bullets

Tsai was hit by eight bullets, with two penetrating his heart and one to the head. He died on the way to hospital, police said.

Police said two of Tsai's associates were injured during the shooting, but were in stable condition after emergency treatment.

The gunman then forced a taxi to pull over and got into the car, leaving the site with the pistol still in his hand, police said.

Police found 14 empty bullet casings at the site.

The shooting terrified the hundreds of guests at the party, who initially confused the gunfire with the sound of firecrackers. Police said they have not identified the gunman.

Tsai and his associates are suspected of running illegal casinos in the Wanhua District, police said.

    illegal casino

Police believe that Tsai was involved in an incident in which he lost several million dollars at an illegal casino in Taipei's Beitou(北投) District that belongs to a member of the notorious Heavenly Way Gang (天道盟).

Police said Tsai and a few other suspected gangsters lost lots money at the casino, and later suspected they had been defrauded.

They said the killing may be related to the gambling incident.

More than 10 of Tsai's alleged fellow gangsters yesterday stayed at the funeral parlor where Tsai's body lay in rest, police said.
