Chinese mahogany extracts improve men's sperm count

Research conducted by National Cheng Kung University shows that extracts from the toona sinensis tree, also known as Chinese mahogany, can improve male fertility.

Chang Sue-joan (張素瓊), professor and chairwoman of the school's life sciences department, told a seminar yesterday that a series of research programs she led between 2003 and last year have shown that toona sinensis extracts can minimize the harm caused by oxidative stress to human sperm.

Some of her research results were published in 2005 at the 18th International Congress of Nutrition in Durban, South Africa, and published in the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Chang said the WHO has provided evidence showing an overall reduction in male fertility during the past few decades. She said the decreasing quality of semen and declining sperm count is due partly to long-term exposure to oxidative stress. She said toona sinensis could be the answer to deteriorating sperm count woes.

Toona sinensis shoots have long been used by Chinese as a leafy vegetable for cooking or crushed to use as a spice.
