Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊) was discharged from a Kaohsiung hospital yesterday, ending her 45-day hospitalization.
Chen was admitted to Chungho Memorial Hospital on April 26 after feeling dizzy.
She remained hospitalized because doctors found that blood clots in a small blood vessel in Chen's brain had interrupted the blood flow to its left hemisphere, affecting movement on the right side of her body.
Local TV stations including ETTV and FTV showed footage of Chen walking on her own from her ward to the hospital lobby as she left the hospital.
She arrived at her residence around 11am.
Hospital vice president Lai Wen-te (賴文德) said the mayor's blood pressure had stabilized.
Her cholesteral has also been reduced, the doctor said, adding that Chen has been cleared to walk and review official documents.
Lai cautioned Chen against overwork and said she needs to return to the hospital for weekly check-ups and to continue her rehabilitation and medical treatment.
"The vice president of the hospital advised that I lose some weight," Chen said. "They [the doctors] also said I was leading a fatiguing lifestyle in the past. Although I made it through by my willpower, this lifestyle was wrong. They told me to work hard, but ordered me to get sufficient rest."
Doctors said she will need up to three months of rehabilitation therapy.
"I will devote myself to municipal issues as well as health management in the future," Chen said. "This incident has taught me a lesson."
