National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu City is to establish a new research center for intelligent prosthetics, specializing in assisting the physically impaired with advanced bionic devices or biomedical technology, university president Wu Chung-yu (吳重雨) announced yesterday.
Wu said the center will be headed by Liu Wen-tai (劉文泰), a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Liu, who has been devoted to the research and development of electronic eyes for years, said that with the center's help, the improvement of the existing generation of electronic eyes should provide fruitful results.
The new generation of electronic eyes will have a light-sensing matrix of 8x8 pixels to provide wider vision and power will be provided by wireless transmission to allow greater head movement, Liu said.
The improved version will enter human testing soon both in the US and Taiwan, Liu said.
