Lotto winners give credit to ancestral spirits for their win

Residents of Yuanchang Township (元長) in Yunlin County are crediting ancestral spirits for visiting their dreams and giving them winning lottery numbers after they rescued their remains from a neglected grave.

Yunlin County Councilor Tsai Ming-shui (蔡明水) said that he accidentally came upon exposed bones protruding from an overgrown plot while visiting the graves of his ancestors during Tomb Sweeping Day this year. Feeling sorry for the spirits of the dead, he organized a group of approximately 30 local residents to dig up the bones, clean them and re-bury them properly so that the spirits could be at peace.

The team eventually unearthed more than 500 bones and the budget ran to NT$200,000 for the one-month effort.

Tsai said that the spirits have visited his dreams several times to thank him for rescuing them.

Wu Shan-ming (吳山明), head of the association established to manage the refurbished graves, said that he had also received a visit from the spirits in his dreams on Monday night. He said they thanked him by giving him the numbers 05 and 08. Wu told the other members of the group about his vision, and they won more than NT$10 million on the lotto when the numbers were drawn the next day.

They plan to donate a portion of the winnings to the grave maintenance association and other charitable efforts.
