Dig sites in Taoyuan span two cultures

Prehistoric archeological sites located at Tayuan Elementary School in Taoyuan cover prehistoric cultures spanning two different time periods, an archeologist reported yesterday.

Liu Yi-chang (¼B¯q©÷), a researcher with Academia Sinica's Institute of History and Philology, who is manager of the excavation project on the elementary school's property, said that not only had two very different prehistoric archeological sites been identified at the "Chienshan Prehistoric Site (¦y¤s¿ò§})," the excavation team found the site stretches as far as the parking lots at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Liu and his team have been working on the site since late last month under a contract with the Taoyuan County government after stone and pottery shards were unearthed by workers doing a campus renovation project.

Since then, Liu said, his team has begun four excavations.

After excavating 60cm to 80cm at each site, the archeologists unearthed more stone and pottery shards, Liu said.
