Su promises Taichung money to finish road project

By Jimmy Chuang  /  STAFF REPORTER

Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) promised more money for Taichung and Fengyuan residents during a visit to central Taiwan yesterday.

Su promised Taichung a budget of NT$1.8 billion (US$55 million) and Fengyuan another NT$1.4 billion to build beltway systems for the Central Taiwan Science Park (中部科學園區) and Fengyuan City.

Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) told Su that the construction of the beltway system for the Central Taiwan Science Park had been seriously delayed because the government had used up the budget and a new budget had not been granted.

"A convenient transport link is very important or key for the development of a science park like this," Su said. "There is no question that the Cabinet will help finish the construction."

The unfinished beltway will be Fengyuan's second beltway system and is called "Fengyuan Boulevard."

The construction of the 11.5km-long beltway began in 1999 but 2km remains unfinished.

Taichung County Government Construction Department Director Weng Wen-teh (翁文德) told Su that the last 2km would be difficult, but it was crucial because once the road was finished, Fengyuan residents would be able to commute to Taichung City a lot faster, which would help promote business activities.
