Chen urges fugitive businessman to return to Taiwan

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) urged Rebar Group Chairman Wang You-theng (王又曾), who is on the run in the US after allegedly embezzling corporate funds, to return to Taiwan.

Chen issued the call during a visit to a semiconductor firm in Hsinchu Science Park, accompanied by Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) and Minister of Economic Affairs Steve Chen (陳瑞隆).

Chen expressed concern that the Rebar case had dealt a heavy blow to the stability of the nation's financial markets and had rocked public confidence.

Saying the government's financial reform drive was still in progress, Chen said that business groups also have to assume their share of social responsibility.

He also instructed the relevant government agencies to help Rebar Group workers in need and provide the public with a clear explanation of the Rebar case.

Wang fled the country on Dec. 30, arriving in the US via China, after a run on the Rebar-affiliated Chinese Bank (中華銀行).
