Kaohsiung loses in bid to host 2011 University Games

Kaohsiung City yesterday lost its bid to host the 2011 Universiade, which are also known as the World University Games, to Shenzhen, China.

The failure marks the southern port city's third failure to gain the right to host the games over the past decade.

The Executive Committee of the World University Sports Federation (FISU) selected Shenzhen from among five final candidates to host the 2011 event. The other candidates were Kazan, Russia; Poznan, Poland; and Murcia, Spain.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (³¯µâ), who was in Torino, Italy, promoting the bid, said that although she regretted the loss, she was touched nonethless because the city government's staffers had put a lot of effort into the bid.
