An Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) official told a conference yesterday on the electric power industry's global warming strategies that the impact of climate change on Taiwan was obvious and could be seen in many ways. Young Chea-yuan (楊之遠), director-general of the Bureau of Air Quality Protection and Noise Control, said that Taiwan ranks 22nd globally in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and accounts for 1 percent of global emissions. The average temperature rise in Taiwan over the last century was between 0.98oC and 1.43oC, which was higher than the global average of 0.6oC, Young said, adding that the highest temperature in Taipei (37.4 degrees Celsius
) and Ilan (38.8oC) were both 70-year records.
Eight Chinese naval vessels and 24 military aircraft were detected crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait between 6am yesterday and 6am today, the Ministry of National Defense said this morning. The aircraft entered Taiwan’s northern, central, southwestern and eastern air defense identification zones, the ministry said. The armed forces responded with mission aircraft, naval vessels and shore-based missile systems to closely monitor the situation, it added. Eight naval vessels, one official ship and 36 aircraft sorties were spotted in total, the ministry said.
