Taiwan Quick Take: Hospital hosts special party

Taichung General Veterans Hospital held a birthday party yesterday for a four-year-old girl after she underwent a successful liver transplant at the hospital. The girl, surnamed Huang, was diagnosed with biliary atresia when she was a month old. The condition caused serious fluid accumulation in her abdomen during the first years of her life and the only cure was a liver transplant. Her mother donated part of her own liver for the transplant after the girl had waited in vain for four years for a suitable donor. The transplant was performed on May 17 and was the first time liver tissue had been transplanted from a parent to a child in central Taiwan. The hospital also invited other liver transplant recipients to the party.
