This year's head of the class at the US Military Academy at West Point, whose parents are from Taiwan, was awarded a "Pride of Chinese Descendants" medal by a Taiwan group in Washington on Sunday.
Jessamyn Liu (劉潔), who graduated as valedictorian of West Point's Class of 2006 last month, received the award from Tsai Chi-tsun (蔡啟村), president of the Taiwan Clan Association in Washington, at a dinner to welcome a visiting Taipei County economic and trade promotion delegation led by Taipei County Commissioner Chou Shi-wei (周錫瑋).
Liu was accompanied by her parents at the dinner.
"Jessamyn's never been the girlie type. Growing up, she wanted weapons, not Barbies," said her mother Reiko Liu.
