DPP planning a cross-party dialogue after Tuesday's vote

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Yu Shyi-kun is planning to visit the leaders of the two main opposition parties after the legislative vote on a motion to recall President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) on Tuesday, a DPP official said yesterday.

According to DPP spokesman Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯), the DPP would try to stabilize the situation after the political turmoil and hoped that opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) would take part in a cross-party dialogue to be promoted by the president.

    allegations

On Friday, the president said he would push for political consultations with the opposition and peace talks with China after the vote on his recall, which was initiated by the opposition pan-blue alliance of the KMT and PFP in the wake of a spate of corruption allegations involving the first family and Chen's close aides.

If more than two-thirds of the legislators vote in favor of the recall motion, it would then be put to a national referendum.

However, with the pan-blue alliance controlling only a slim majority in the legislature, the odds of the motion passing the legislature are believed to be slim.

Local media reports have said that the pan-blue alliance might initiate a second campaign to recall Chen if the motion fails to pass on Tuesday.

    another recall

Pan Wei-kang (潘維剛), a KMT caucus whip, refused to confirm if the party was planning a second recall campaign and stressed that the KMT's priority at present is to make sure the motion passes the legislature next week so that the people can decide whether the president should be ousted.

Pan said that the KMT, in addition to holding public briefings to explain to the people the reasons for recalling Chen, is lobbying DPP legislators to support the motion.
