As part of its 19th anniversary celebrations, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday held a luncheon in Taipei for foreign diplomats and representatives.
At the event, DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) reiterated the DPP's insistence on democracy and reform, and pledged the party's devotion to take care of minority and ethnic groups.
Over 100 diplomats and ambassadors took part in the event, which was held at the Far Eastern Plaza Hotel.
Su first expressed his appreciation for those countries that gave a warm reception to him and President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) during their just-concluded 13-day trip in Central America.
"After traveling 49,000 miles, President Chen told us jokingly that this is an around-the-world trip that is only meant for an iron-man or panda," Su said.
"This is no exaggeration, because you needed iron physical strength in order to survive this trip. And during the trip, we looked like pandas because we all carried black circles under our eyes," Su said.
Including transit stops in the US, the UAE and Bali, Su and Chen visited eight different countries, including Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, St. Kitts and Nevis, Nicaragua and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Su said that he felt the diplomatic impasse that Taiwan faced during the trip, but that he also realized that there are many breakthroughs can be achieved.
The international society oftentimes rejects Taiwan, but Taiwan has never stopped its efforts to integrate with the world, Su said.
