EU says it hopes for more cross-strait discussions

The European Union's executive arm voiced hope yesterday that talks between Chinese authorities and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) would lead to broader discussions.

"We welcome any steps towards dialogue that are taken and we hope that both sides will be able to build on this to move toward a dialogue that will involve all the parties," EU commission spokeswoman Emma Udwin said.

Her comments came as KMT leader Lien Chan (³s¾Ô) wrapped up a landmark visit to China that has created new optimism about cross-strait relations.

Brussels reiterated its support for a "one China" policy, but called on Taiwan and China to pursue dialogue.

"We take every opportunity to urge both sides to avoid any action that can inflame tensions across the straits and we continue to believe that a solution to tensions that arise should be sought through dialogue," Udwin said.
