    Vietnam to tackle `matchmaking'

    By Cody Yiu
    STAFF REPORTER
    Wednesday, Mar 16, 2005, Page 2

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday said the Vietnamese government will crack down on illegal matchmaking activities in that country.

"It's good news, actually, as this measure aims to crack down on human trafficking while safeguarding legitimate matchmaking activities," ministry spokesman Michel Lu (§f¼yÀs) said.

According to the statement, a recent news report in the Saigon Liberation newspaper reported that the Vietnamese government had ordered police to commence a massive crackdown on illegal matchmaking, including companies who ply the trade and the individuals who pay for their services.

In addition, beginning yesterday, Vietnamese police will inspect venues where Vietnamese women meet foreign men for matchmaking purposes or where wedding ceremonies take place.
