Women speak on threesome photo scandal

    STAFF REPORTER
    Saturday, Mar 13, 2004, Page 2

Women groups spoke out yesterday about the controversy aroused by author Su Yu-chen (蘇玉珍) publicizing nude photos of herself, her lover and his wife, saying that they could understand Su's behavior but it was something they would not encourage other women to repeat.

Su showed the photos and DVDs at a press conference she called on Monday in response to photographer Lai Yao-tsun's (賴燿村) claims on March 3 that he was actually the author of Su's book Death of a Writer and that she was a fake who couldn't write a word.

Saying that she has "had enough," Su told reporters that Lai had invited her to sign a "contract" two years ago to agree to live with him and his wife Liu Cheng-ching (劉正清) as a threesome.

She said they had been lovers before that.

She said the three of them had sex and occasionally took nude pictures of each other. She said Lai also had sex with other women and was photographed doing so by either her or his wife.

Sue Huang (黃淑英), chairwoman of Taiwan Women's Link (台灣女人連線), said yesterday that she did not know Su but she understood how a divorced woman felt so she was not surprised by what Su did

"Observing and reviewing the entire issue as an independent third party, I can only say that I totally understand why she [Su] would do so and I can really feel her heart," Huang said.

"I understand that this was a way for her to cope with her pains," Huang said.

However, she also said that she would not encourage other women to do the same thing.

"I have no comment on her personal behavior. But I also believed that she has thought about it and realized what kind of moral pressure from the public she will be facing before she did so," Huang said.

"That was her own decision and she certainly has her rights to do so, too," Huang said.

Su told reporters that she had met Lai at a photography exhibition while she was still married to author and talk-show host Ku Ling (苦苓).

She said they immediately fell in love.

She and Ku Ling divorced in July 2002 over his extra-marital

    affairs.

Death of a Writer, an erotic novel about a man living a double life among his wife and mistresses, was published after her divorce.

Su claimed that half of the novel came from her real life, while the other half was from her imagination. The book was a top-10 bestseller.

It killed Ku Ling's reputation as a faithful husband and he was forced to quit his TV programs.

In her press conference, Su did not address Lai's claims that he had ghostwritten the book.
