Powell praised for support at World Health Assembly

    CNA, WASHINGTON
    Saturday, Oct 04, 2003, Page 4

Members of the Taiwan Caucus in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday jointly sent letters to Secretary of State Colin Powell and Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thomp-son to thank them for their support of Taiwan at the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May.

Representative Sherrod Brown of Ohio and 26 other members of the caucus expressed the hope that the US government would make even greater efforts to help Taiwan obtain observer status in the World Health Organization (WHO).

They said the SARS outbreak earlier this year proved that diseases recognize no national boundaries and that it has shown the importance of letting all people in the world join the WHO.

Taiwan's bid to join the WHO has won strong support in the US, Japan and the EU, they said.
