Eastern region gains three universities


The establishment of new universities in the three counties in eastern Taiwan serves as an important milestone in the nation's efforts to create a more balanced distribution of education resources, President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) said yesterday.

Chen made the remarks when he addressed a ceremony marking the upgrading of National Taitung Teachers College to National Taitung University -- making it the first university in Taitung, where Aboriginal citizens make up nearly one-third of the population.

On Thursday, Chen officiated at a similar ceremony in Miaoli marking the upgrading of the National Lien-Ho Institute of Technology to National United University. He spoke at a site of expansion construction for the university, the first to open in the predominantly Hakka county.

Also established on Thursday was National Ilan University, which used to called the National Ilan Institute of Technology. It is the first university in the Ilan County.

Chen said the establishment of the three universities will help meet a need in the region.
