One-half of world's longest marriage dies at age of 103

    STAFF REPORTER AND CNA

The 103-year-old wife in a couple whose marriage is recognized by the Guinness World of Records as the world's longest, died at her home in Taoyuan County from natural causes on Monday, leaving behind her 104-year-old husband, according to family members.

"She went peacefully and didn't suffer much," said Chen Ying-ru (³¯¬Õ¦p), their daughter-in-law.

The funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Married in 1917, Liu Yang-wan (¼B·¨§¹) and Liu Yung-yang (¼B¥Ã¾i) were certified at a ceremony by the Guinness World of Records in November last year as the couple with the world's longest marriage -- 85 years and seven months.

Their marriage is two years longer than their nearest rivals, a couple in Kentucky who married 83 years ago.

According to Chen, Liu Yang-wan was adopted by her husband's parents when she was a child with the purpose of marrying her to their son, Liu Yung-yang, when she grew up.

It was a common Chinese practice some 60 years ago, especially in impoverished farming families which desperately needed more manpower to work in the field.

Liu Yang-wan had been unwell and lost her eyesight three years ago. She had to use a wheelchair in the last three years in her life.
