CNA , PORT-AU-PRINCE

A highway linking the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince's international airport to the city's downtown district, which was completed with funds donated by Taiwan, has been inaugurated to improve traffic conditions in the Caribbean country.

While presiding over a ceremony to mark the inauguration of the infrastructure, Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide expressed gratitude for the aid program extended by the Taiwan government to his country, hailing the highway construction as the most successful cooperation plan between the two nations.

Aristide said that thanks to the Taiwan's financial assistance, the highway was completed to improve the traffic on the way to the international airport.

He also lauded engineers from Overseas Construction Corp (OCC), invested in by Taiwan business groups, for their achievement in completing the construction project.

The Taiwan government donated more than US$8 million to help construct the 7.26km highway linking Port-au-Prince's downtown area to its international airport, which is Haiti's main gateway.

The first two sections of the highway were built by a Haitian contractor and the remaining five sections were all constructed by OCC, which helped train Haitian engineers and skilled workers.
