Hong Kong dented China’s World Cup qualifying hopes and helped 2022 hosts Qatar reach the next round with a 0-0 draw in front of rowdy home fans who again booed their shared anthem on Tuesday.
After teams around Asia held a somber moment’s silence for the Paris attacks, Australia thumped Bangladesh 4-0, but Japan were less convincing in a 2-0 win over Cambodia.
Hong Kong were not one of the night’s winners, but they celebrated as if they were after holding China to a goalless draw which kept them ahead of their rivals in Group C, a result which put leaders Qatar through.

Fans jeered the March of the Volunteers anthem, which the territory shares with mainland China, while some turned their backs and held up signs saying: “Boo.”
With two games to go, China are now scrambling to reach the third round as one of the four best-performing second-placed teams as they lie third, and also trail rivals among the other seven groups on points.
“When you play in other cities, there are much more people and even in China, the stadiums have more people,” China coach Alain Perrin said when asked if the hostile crowd was a factor.
“We created many chances to score, but we missed,” he added.
Failure to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia would be a big blow to China, who have successfully reformed their corruption-plagued domestic league and are tipped to be planning a bid to host the competition.
Their fate will not generate much sympathy among fans in Hong Kong, which was gripped by “Umbrella movement” democracy rallies last year in defiance of Beijing’s rule.
Qatar, the 2022 hosts, became the first to progress and simultaneously earned a spot at the 2019 Asian Cup in UAE when they beat whipping-boys Bhutan 3-0 to take their 100 percent record to six wins in six games.
Elsewhere, evergreen striker Tim Cahill hit a hat-trick as Australia fired all four of their goals past Bangladesh in the first half in a match played under heavy security following safety warnings in Dhaka.
Captain Mile Jedinak also got on the scoresheet as the Asian champions went provisionally top of Group B before the result of Jordan’s away match against Kyrgyzstan later.
In Phnom Penh, Japan had an own-goal from Cambodia’s Laboravy Khoun to thank before AC Milan’s Keisuke Honda got their second in the final minute in an unexpectedly tough evening.
Malaysia, playing in front of an empty stadium as punishment for crowd trouble in an earlier qualifier, lost 2-1 to UAE — an improvement at least from the record 10-0 loss the last time they met.
Syria made sure of second spot in Group E when they beat 10-man Singapore 2-1 thanks to a brace from Omar Kharbin, who scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the game.
Elsewhere in Asian qualifiers, Kyrgyzstan beat Jordan 1-0, while Turkmenistan beat Oman 2-1.

Chen Yi-tung (陳奕通) secured a historic Olympic berth on Sunday by winning the senior men’s foil event at the 2024 Asia Oceania Zonal Olympic Fencing Qualifiers in United Arab Emirates. Chen defeated Samuel Elijah of Singapore 15-4 in the final in Dubai to secure the only wild card in the event, making him the first male Olympian fencer from Taiwan in 36 years and only the sixth Taiwanese fencer to ever qualify for the quadrennial event. The last appearance by a Taiwanese male fencer at the Olympics was in 1988, when Wang San-tsai (王三財) and Cheng Ming-hsiang (鄭明祥) competed in Seoul. The
A soccer jersey carrying a national map including disputed Western Sahara has become a hot commodity in Morocco after a diplomatic dispute with Algeria. Retailers said RS Berkane jerseys have been flying off the shelves after a Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup match against Algerian club USM Alger was canceled last month over the jerseys. “We are overwhelmed by the influx of messages and requests,” said Brahim Rabii, representative of the official RS Berkane jersey distributor. Algeria broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, partly over the issue of Western Sahara. The former Spanish colony is largely controlled by Morocco, but claimed
