Manchester City hit back to draw 2-2 at home to Liverpool in a thrilling game on Sunday, but the result left Manchester United with a daunting nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
After City old boy Daniel Sturridge canceled out Edin Dzeko’s opener for the hosts, a 73rd-minute Steven Gerrard thunderbolt gave Liverpool a glimpse of victory, only for Sergio Aguero to level moments later.
While Liverpool can take heart from a bold display at the Etihad Stadium that followed their 2-2 draw at Arsenal last week, City are left to contemplate the unenviable task of reeling in United.

“We didn’t play well. In the last month we played well in all the games, but we were so nervous in this game and I don’t know why,” said City manager Roberto Mancini, who refused to concede defeat in the title race. “Is the title race over? No. Seven or nine points [deficit] don’t change. I think we can recover it.”
Liverpool took the game to City in the early stages, with Pablo Zabaleta sliding in to thwart Sturridge after he had rounded Joe Hart and Luis Suarez shooting wide, but it was the hosts who took the lead in the 23rd minute.

It was the Bosnian striker’s 11th league goal of the campaign, but he was to play an unwitting role in Liverpool’s equalizer six minutes later.
Believing he had been fouled by Daniel Agger, Dzeko stayed down on the pitch, but play continued and a Liverpool attack culminated in Sturridge beating Hart with a crisp low strike to peg back his former club.
Gerrard put Liverpool ahead with the kind of goal upon which he has built his reputation, chesting down a high ball and letting rip with a stunning half-volley that flashed past Hart into the bottom-left corner.
It was fitting reward for the visitors’ enterprise, but a rush of blood to the head from Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina helped Aguero equalize just five minutes later.
The Spaniard raced out to the left-hand edge of his area to challenge the City striker, but Aguero neatly eluded him before brilliantly curving a shot into the empty net from a prohibitive angle.
“It should have been a win for ourselves,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. “I thought we played terrific and were the dominant team. We scored two wonderful goals and I am disappointed with the goals we conceded.”
Earlier, Tottenham Hotspur lost Jermain Defoe to injury, but won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion through a fine Gareth Bale goal to bolster their push for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Emmanuel Adebayor’s commitments with Togo at the Africa Cup of Nations have left Defoe as Spurs’ only senior striker, but he had to go off in the 39th minute at The Hawthorns after appearing to twist his ankle.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas later revealed that he had been withdrawn from England’s squad for their friendly against Brazil tomorrow.
Spurs were given a helping hand early in the second half when West Brom’s Macedonian leftback Goran Popov, on loan from Dynamo Kiev, was shown a straight red card for spitting toward Spurs rightback Kyle Walker.
The visitors made their numerical advantage count in the 67th minute when Bale took his tally for the season to 11 league goals with a vicious strike from just outside the area.
West Brom coach Steve Clarke said Popov would face punishment over his actions.
“There are no excuses at all for Goran Popov, he has let everyone down,” Clarke told the BBC. “It would be a strong case for him to receive disciplinary action, but it will be dealt with internally.”

The Bucks trailed by as many as 16 on their home floor, but Antetokounmpo scored 12 of his 30 points in the final quarter to help seal the win in a frantic finish that saw five lead changes in the final 45.7 seconds. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) added 10 rebounds and five assists. It was his 158th regular-season game with at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and
For the first time in almost 36 years, a Parisian derby will be played in French soccer’s top flight when reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain FC take on the nouveau riche Paris Football Club (PFC) today. Not one of the players involved in today’s match — PFC’s 38-year-old third-choice goalkeeper Remy Riou is almost certainly not going to be involved — was born the last time there was a Parisian derby in Ligue 1. That was on Feb. 25, 1990, when Moroccan midfielder Aziz Bouderbala scored a brace as Racing Paris 1 beat PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes home that
Stan Wawrinka’s 40-year-old legs did not let him down over three-plus hours in his first singles match of a farewell tour yesterday. Three-time Grand Slam singles champion Wawrinka beat Arthur Rinderknech of France, who is ranked 29th to Wawrinka’s 157th, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). The match went 3 hours, 16 minutes. Wawrinka last month announced that this year would be his last on the ATP tour. “Today was a tough battle ... it’s amazing to come here for the first time, to have so much support,” Wawrinka said yesterday. “Twenty years on tour, you kind of always play in the same place
Manchester City have confirmed defender Josko Gvardiol suffered a broken leg in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Gvardiol was one of two City centerbacks who went off injured in the second half, along with Ruben Dias, before Enzo Fernandez scored a stoppage-time equalizer for the visitors. The draw left second-placed City six points behind English Premier League leaders Arsenal. City, announcing Gvardiol sustained a tibial fracture to his right leg, added in a statement issued on Monday: “The defender will have surgery later this week and assessment remains ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the
