Homers lit up the Pingtung sky in the CPBL yesterday afternoon as the Uni-President Lions pounded the Brother Elephants in a 9-0 final to win their season-opener.
The Lion’s top order consisted of Yang Song-hsuen, Pan Wu-hsiung and the newly acquired bashing tandem of Chen Yong-chi (formerly with the Oakland Athletics’ minors) and Chang Tai-shan (formerly with the Sinon Bulls), who took turns in taking the Elephant pitchers deep with one blast apiece in a home-run hitting clinic.
The result was a commanding 8-0 lead through the fourth for the Lions, as they dominated the defending champs from the get-go.
It was an especially meaningful day for Chen and Chang as they greeted the new season with combined 7-for-9 hitting and four RBIs to account for nearly half of the Cats’ total run production. That silenced any doubts that had being circulating around the league over their ability to adapt to their new team.
Chang had opted to join the Lions as a player instead of taking on a player-coach role with the Bulls, at the Bulls’ request, while Chen had decided to end a six-year stint in the US minor league.
Spotted with a big lead, Lion starter Pan “Du Du” Wei-luen scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings, before his bullpen came up with two hitless frames to keep the shutout win intact for the staff ace.
As for the Elephants, things did not look very positive after their opening day win over the Sinon Bulls as starter Carlos Castillo lasted only three innings after serving up three homers over the same span to lose for the first time this season.
MONKEYS 11, BULLS 4
The Lamigo Monkeys kicked off the new season on a high note with a convincing 11-4 trouncing of the Sinon Bulls at the Intercontinental Baseball Stadium in Taichung yesterday afternoon.
Ken Ray hurled six strong innings to pick up his first win of the season, while the loss went to his counterpart, Lin Ying-jeh, who gave up five runs on nine hits in a disappointing outing.
Freddie Freeman homered and drove in four runs, Shohei Ohtani also went deep and Roki Sasaki earned his first major league win as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday night for their seventh straight victory. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the series to improve to 5-0 against Atlanta this year. Los Angeles’ three-game sweep at home early in the season left the Braves 0-7. Sasaki allowed three runs and six hits over five innings. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up a home run to Ozzie Albies, but received plenty of offensive support in his
Bayern Munich on Sunday were crowned German champions for the 34th time, giving striker Harry Kane his first major trophy, after second-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 2-2 at SC Freiburg. Bayern’s 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday, when the Bavarians came from two goals down to take the lead before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, meant defending Bundesliga champions Leverkusen needed to win at Freiburg to delay the title party. Leverkusen were two goals down before scoring twice in the final 10 minutes, but Xabi Alonso’s side could not find a third, as Bayern reclaimed the title at the first attempt after

Italy midfielder Frattesi won a tie for the ages under a downpour in Milan when he lashed home in the 99th minute, sending a packed and rocking San Siro wild with joy. Simone Inzaghi’s team will face either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this month in Munich, Germany, where they would feel they have a great chance to be crowned kings of Europe for a fourth time after
A man fell from the 6.4m-high Clemente Wall in right field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh during Wednesday night’s game between the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. Right after Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to put the Pirates ahead 4-3, players began waving frantically for medical personnel and pointing to the man, who had fallen onto the warning track. The fan was tended to for approximately five minutes by members of both the Pirates and Cubs training staffs as well as PNC personnel before being removed from the field on a cart. The team issued a statement shortly
