Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek said on Saturday he would not overestimate his team’s World Cup chances after they beat New Zealand 3-1 in their final warm-up match.
Slovenia play their Group C opener against Algeria in Polokwane on Sunday, meet the US in Johannesburg five days later and then take on England in Port Elizabeth on June 23.
“It was a good performance and I was especially pleased for [striker] Milivoje Novakovic, to score two excellent goals from free-kicks, but it was only a friendly and World Cup games are going to be a different story,” Kek said. “I am also happy that the injury to Zlatan Ljubijankic [ankle] is not a serious one and he will be fit for the opening game against the Algerians. The most positive thing was the fantastic farewell we got from a capacity 12,000 crowd in Maribor. They were as vociferous and passionate as ever.”
Novakovic took his international tally to 16 goals in 38 games with a pair of superbly taken free-kicks, while Andraz Kirm added the third in an eventful first half on Friday, with Rory Fallon netting New Zealand’s equalizer.
The Slovenians looked dangerous every time they came forward, but were often left exposed at the back and Kek said they needed to improve defensively for the finals.
“There is room for progress in several departments, especially when we don’t have the upper hand, but overall I am satisfied with our buildup for the World Cup,” he said. “We can’t wait to arrive in Johannesburg on Monday morning and the lads are really raring to go.”

The 41-year-old remains a global superstar despite swapping the European elite for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr, and is the leading men’s international goalscorer with 143 strikes. With 25 of those coming in 30 games under Martinez, the coach

FAST AND LOOSE: Despite command struggles, Ohtani has pitched his way out of trouble after falling behind in counts, which manager Roberts credited to his velocity Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday night tossed six innings of no-hit ball, gave himself an early lead with a home run and still was not satisfied with his performance. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar dropped some expletives that were picked up by the on-field mic as he struggled with his command in a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. He struck out seven, walked four and gave up an earned run in the fourth inning while visibly fuming on the mound. Ohtani (5-2) earned his third consecutive victory. “Just command was off, and I just felt like I was battling the lack of
