Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy’s NHL record for the most regular-season appearances by a goalie and the New Jersey Devils marked the occasion with a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.
Patrik Elias scored the winner with 2:36 left, moving the Devils level on points with Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic Division, with two games in hand.
Brodeur played his 1,029th game, all with New Jersey in his 16-year career. Roy played for Montreal and Colorado in his 18-year career.
Illka Pikkarainen also scored to help the Devils beat Montreal for the fifth straight time.

Alexandre Picard and Mike Fisher scored for Ottawa, which closed the gap on the Northeast Division-leading Sabres to four points.

In Chicago, Cristobal Huet made 27 saves for his second shutout of the season, helping Chicago defeat St. Louis.
Patrick Kane assisted on all three Chicago goals, setting up Troy Brouwer, Brian Campbell and Marian Hossa.
The Blackhawks have not allowed a goal over two games and a span of 141 minutes, and moved two points clear atop the Central Division.
Chicago improved their NHL-leading home record to 14-3-1.
