Australia will look to win their first match on the highveld in 45 years when they face South Africa in the second of their back-to-back Tests in the Tri-Nations competition today.
The Wallabies have not won in Johannesburg since 1963 and victory over the world champions, to go with their 27-15 win in Durban a week ago, will see them go top of the competition points table.
They still have a game to play after this weekend, against New Zealand, in Brisbane on Sept. 13, making them favorites to win this year’s competition.

Wallabies boss Robbie Deans though knows that despite his team being in a good position and facing a Springbok side that has lost three Tri-Nations matches on the trot, winning at the formerly named Ellis Park will not come easy.
“South Africa have got one more shot at it in this year’s Tri-Nations,” said Deans on Thursday. “If they can take it [the match], they can park the rest of the tournament and move forward a lot more positively towards their end of season tour preparations,” he said.
“Ask yourself how you’d feel in their position? There’s no doubt they’ll be up for it.” Deans said.
South Africa, while out of the running for the title, do indeed have a lot to play for.
Their coach, Peter de Villiers, is receiving plenty of criticism for his expansive style of rugby and, as world champions, there’s a lot of pride at stake. Also on the line is the Boks’ almost unbeatable reputation at the famous ground.
Captain Victor Matfield said on Thursday his side badly wanted to end their Tri-Nations on a good note.
“We need to win this match for South Africa, for the coaching staff and all involved with the Springboks,” Matfield said.
“One thing we don’t want is to get together for the end of season tour [to Europe] and still be asking ourselves questions about where we are and what we’re doing wrong. We also need to regain our confidence,” he said.
De Villiers has made just two enforced changes to the side that lost in Durban last weekend.
Brian Mujati comes in at tighthead prop for the suspended CJ Van der Linde, while on the right wing Odwa Ndungane replaces JP Pietersen.
Deans has made a surprising five changes to his team, two of those due to injuries. Timana Tahu replaces the injured Berrick Barnes at center, while Hugh McMenimen takes the place of the injured Dan Vickermann.
In other changes, Adam Ashley-Cooper comes into the side at full-back for Drew Mitchell, Phil Waugh starts ahead of George Smith and Tatafu Polota-Nau replaces Stephen Moore.
Jobe Bellingham on Tuesday admitted to having “anxieties” on following in brother Jude’s footsteps after joining Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Jobe Bellingham, 19, is two years younger than Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid in 2023 after three years at Dortmund. A centerpiece of the England national team, Jude Bellingham has emerged as one of the best players in the world in recent seasons. The younger Jobe Bellingham joined Dortmund in June from Sunderland after their promotion to the English Premier League. He admitted he understood what the perception would be ahead of the move to Germany. “It’s something you do think about.
Before Tuesday’s 7-2 win at the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested “most people couldn’t tell you five players on our team.” A look at the standings would indicate more Brewers players soon will be recognized by more fans. After all, it is difficult to overlook a team that not only continues to extend their lead in the National League Central, but also boasts the best record in the majors. “What we’re doing in here right now is special,” right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta said after allowing only four hits and one run in five innings, while setting a career high with
A baseball team from New Taipei City won the US Pony Palomino Division World Series yesterday in Laredo, Texas, defeating the US West representative team from Azusa, California, 2-1. Ku-Pao Home Economics and Commercial High School earned the right to represent Taiwan in the Pony Palomino (17 to 18 age group) World Series after winning this year's Wang Chen-chih Cup, a competition named after Taiwanese-Japanese baseball legend Wang Chen-chih (王貞治), also known as Sadaharu Oh. In the championship game against Azusa, Ku-Pao's starting pitcher Luo Yu-yan (羅于晏) was erratic early, giving up two hits in the bottom of the first inning, followed
Taiwanese pitcher Teng Kai-wei took the mound in New York on Saturday as the starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants in his MLB season debut against the New York Mets, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing five runs. The Taiwanese right-hander struggled early, giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a three-run homer to Mets slugger Pete Alonso — his 250th career home run. However, Teng was not fazed and soon found his footing, holding the Mets scoreless in the bottom of the second and third innings. Meanwhile, Mets starter Kodai Senga of Japan made a few errors
