England manager Fabio Capello has denied reports he will quit his post after the 2010 World Cup, two years before his contract expires with the national team.
¡§I¡¦m still the team manager. The newspapers misquoted me,¡¨ Capello told reporters yesterday in Thailand, where he is passing on his expertise in a coaching clinic and meetings with local coaches.
¡§I still have to work until 2012 because my contract ends that year,¡¨ Capello said.
An Italian newspaper this week quoted Capello saying that he would step down after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
¡§This is certain,¡¨ he was quoted as saying by Italian daily La Repubblica when asked if he would retire after the World Cup.
The 62-year-old Italian was appointed to the England job at the end of last year, tasked with ensuring England qualify for the World Cup, having missed out on Euro 2008.
England¡¦s first World Cup qualifier, and Capello¡¦s first meaningful match in charge of the team, will be on Sept. 6 against Andorra.
The other teams in European qualification Group 6 are Croatia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Prior to joining England, Capello had been one of the world¡¦s top club coaches, winning domestic titles with every club he had managed ¡X Real Madrid, Milan, Juventus and Roma.
