Taiwanese baseball authorities announced the nation’s Olympic baseball line-up on Monday.
The squad of 24 includes 15 players from Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), with the remainder coming from the minor leagues in the US, the Japanese professional league and local colleges, according to a press release on the CPBL Web site.
The La New Bears are the biggest contributor of players with six, while the dmedia T-Rex were the only CPBL franchise that failed to have any of their players selected.
Taiwan’s first game is against the Netherlands on Aug. 13, to be followed by showdowns with Japan, China, Cuba, South Korea, the US and Canada.
The final will be played on Aug. 23.

China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper on Monday published an essay about Chinese basketball it said was written by LeBron James, but a representative for the NBA star said on Thursday that the article was based on a series of interviews. The paper, better known as the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, had said James authored the essay, “Basketball is a Bridge that Connects Us,” a tribute to Chinese players and fans of the sport written in the first person. “LeBron James Pens an Article in the People’s Daily,” read a post published on the newspaper’s official WeChat account.
