The Yingge Citizens’ Allotments, which New Taipei City’s Agriculture Department recommends as a secret spot for flower viewing, is experiencing a red fire ant crisis. On Friday last week the Agriculture Department rushed people to the scene to spray insecticide to exterminate the fire ants and take urgent preventive measures for the district. The department urges members of the public to stay away from the fire ants, so as to avoid getting stung and bitten by them.
The Yingge Citizens’ Allotments cover about 2.8 hectares of farmland. Since the land is currently in the fallow period, the fields are lacking in moisture, and this has led to a large-scale invasion of red fire ants. In October, students from seven elementary schools in Yingge went into the fields and scattered a large quantity of garden cosmos, sulfur cosmos and zinnia flower seeds, and one of the students taking part accidentally got stung by fire ants.
Local farmers say they applied insecticide a month ago to control the ants, but it will take between three months and half a year to get rid of them completely. Now that a big sea of flowers is blooming, the farm workers are all worried that people who go to see them may get stung, but they have no way of stopping people from going in, so all they can do is keep reminding visitors to be careful.

Chang Li-chen, head of the Agriculture Department’s farm and husbandry management section, says that the main area of New Taipei City where red fire ants have appeared is the banks of the Dahan River, and preventive measures are being applied to a total area of 6,000 hectares in the municipality. Chang says that the area in which the ants have been detected on this occasion was previously not included in the prevention zone. She surmises that river water may have carried them into the area when typhoons passed through Taiwan earlier this year.
Local farmers, for their part, say that fallow and dry land is always a high-risk area for red fire ants to appear. They have tied red ribbons around the edge of the flower fields as a warning, and they say that people will be safer if they keep a distance of at least 30 centimeters when they approach fields to view the flowers.

South Korea’s famous kimchi is falling victim to climate change, with scientists, farmers and manufacturers saying the quality and quantity of the napa cabbage that is pickled to make the ubiquitous dish is suffering due to rising temperatures. Napa cabbage thrives in cooler climates, and is usually planted in mountainous regions where temperatures during the key growing summer season once rarely rose above 25 degrees Celsius. Studies show that warmer weather brought about by climate change is now threatening these crops, so much so that South Korea might not be able to grow napa cabbage one day due to the intensifying heat. “We
It’s widely recognized that there are far more right-handed people than left-handed people in the world. Being right-handed simply means preferring to use one’s right hand for tasks that involve only one hand, such as writing and eating. But have you ever wondered about the possible reasons behind the global dominance of the right hand over the left? As with many complex biological questions, multiple factors appear to be at play. First, one reason seems to be genetics. __1__ Therefore, the global dominance of right-handedness is something that has been passed down through many generations of humans. Next,
On blazing hot summer days, fresh ingredients and cool refreshments straight from a refrigerator feel like nothing short of a miracle. However, chilled foods didn’t begin with modern refrigerators. In fact, the origin of refrigeration precedes the invention of this now-indispensable appliance by centuries. Initially, the quest for refrigeration was motivated more by the desire to cool beverages than to preserve food. The ancient Greeks and Romans, for instance, used snow stored in insulated pits to chill wine. Around the fourth century BC, the Persians made a significant stride in refrigeration techniques when they devised the yakhchal. Fashioned from

Historically, items that require physical manipulation have been designed for right-handed use. For example, tools like scissors and musical instruments are often constructed with right-handers in mind, making it difficult for left-handers to use them. __4__ While these factors offer some explanation, they remain speculative. The precise reasons for the global prevalence of right-handed people continue to be debated. Nevertheless, left-handedness will remain a phenomenon of great curiosity among scientists and researchers for many years to come. What Did You Learn?
