World famous Taiwanese film director Ang Lee recently decided to use the southern town of Kenting as a location for his next production.
Lee is currently planning to shoot a movie adaptation of the novel Life of Pi, in which the lead character, a boy named Pi, spends 227 days drifting across the ocean on a boat before being washed up on the Mexican coast. Kenting was chosen because of its similarity to the Mexican landscape. The movie is scheduled to be released on Dec. 14, 2012.
Film crew were spotted scouting out locations on the Hengchun Peninsula last Saturday. At a beach resort on the west coast, the crew snorkeled in the water to test its temperature and were also seen inspecting weeping fig trees for suitability in the shoot.

Lee plans to spend two weeks in Kenting shooting the scenes where Pi gets washed ashore. He joked, “Kenting looks more like Mexico than Mexico. It’s got some weird trees and looks very interesting. Nearer the time we’ll just need to find some Mexicans to play the fishermen who find Pi.”
Locals spotted an Indian actor and several foreign crewmembers snorkeling and discussing the beach near to a holiday resort on Kenting’s west coast. They appeared satisfied with the suitability of the beach.
Seventeen-year-old Indian student Suraj Sharma was chosen in October from over 3,000 hopefuls to play the lead role of Pi Patel. He lives with his parents in Bangalore and has no previous acting experience.
Sharma’s classmate, Ishan Shivakumar, told the Times of India that they watched Lee’s Hulk as kids and first became aware of homosexuality when they saw Brokeback Mountain. In the movie Sharma will have to speak Indian English, French and Tamil and will also have to narrate short passages in Koranic Arabic and Sanskrit.
Kenting has been abuzz with excitement since the news broke that it would be used as a location in an Ang Lee movie. Locals hope that by giving the natural beauty of Hengchun Peninsula international exposure, the movie will prove to be an even bigger money-spinner than Cape No. 7.

It’s no secret that Japanese people have a deep affection for noodles. Like in the rest of East Asia, noodles are an important staple food, second only to rice. As time passed, noodles in Japan not only became widespread but also developed some unique Japanese characteristics. The three most popular types of noodles in Japan are ramen, soba, and udon. Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
Continued from yesterday(延續自昨日) https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang As with many aspects of Japanese culture, there is etiquette to follow when you enjoy noodles. To fully experience noodles like a local on your next visit to Japan, consider these simple guidelines. First, be careful where you put your chopsticks. Don’t leave them sticking up in the broth or set them at the side of the bowl. When you have finished eating or if you’re taking a break, place them on the chopstick rest next to the bowl. Also, it is impolite to wave chopsticks around or bring them above mouth-level. Second, don’t take too
