A Swiss adventurer became the first person to fly across the English Channel using only a jet-powered wing, after twice postponing his bid due to bad weather.
Yves Rossy, a 49-year-old pilot, took off over Calais around 1pm English time on Sept. 26, for the 10-15 minute flight across the 35km channel, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
Weather was good for the attempt, although organizers appeared worried about the wind at the cliff-top landing site outside Dover, on the southern English coast.

“In terms of visibility conditions were very good. The wind conditions were do-able, but not more than that. The big problem was the gusts of wind,” said Stephane Marmier, a skydiver and part of the support team.
With the carbon wing strapped to his back, Rossy leapt out of a small plane at an altitude of 2,500m before jetting off at speeds of more than 200km per hour.
In 2004, he became the first man to fly with jet-powered wings.
Rossy wanted to follow in the footsteps of French inventor Louis Bleriot, who became the first person to fly across the English Channel in a plane 99 years ago, taking 37 minutes for the trip.
