Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country in the world and has one of the world's largest reserves of unexplored oil. Poverty is widespread in Kazakhstan, but it has been using its oil wealth to modernize and to exert its international clout.

Spread out over 2.7 million km2, Kazakhstan is an enormous country with a diverse range of landscapes. The Kazakh steppe covers about one third of the country and is the largest dry steppe in the world, and lying on the borders of the country are both the Caspian and the Aral Seas.
The people of Kazakhstan are almost as diverse as the landscape. Kazakhs make up about half the population, Russians make up about a quarter and a variety of smaller ethnic minorities make up the rest.
Kazakhstan is a former autonomous republic of the USSR and declared independence in 1991. From the start of Kazakhstan's independence to the present, the country has been governed by President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
During his time in office, Nazarbayev has worked hard to consolidate his power. Dissent is suppressed and elections have been run with little regard to fairness. But analysts say that Nazarbayev is generally popular, and Kazakhs are optimistic of a future economic boom.
Kazakhstan has many powerful allies in the West, including the US and the UK, both of whom appreciate Kazakhstan's energy supplies and its support of the Iraq War. Nazarbayev has said he feels Kazakhstan will become one of the world's 50 most developed countries by 2013, which is an attainable goal because of the oil wealth that is being used to drive the country's development.(Michael Kearney, Staff Writer)
WHO KNEW?
Kazakhstan was thrust into the headlines by the 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
In the film, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen plays Borat Sagdiyev, a Kazakh television reporter. The film depicts Borat, and most Kazakhs, as racist anti-Semites who like to drink horse urine.
Based on an interview conducted in Britain, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev seemed to take the film in good humor, stating, "The film was created by a comedian, so let's laugh at it."
But many other Kazakhs were not amused. The foreign ministry even threatened to take legal action.
In response to the controversy, Baron Cohen said, "The joke is not on Kazakhstan. I think the joke is on people who can believe that the Kazakhstan that I describe can exist."

The strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years killed at least 16 people and damaged dozens of buildings, but the destruction was largely contained thanks to decades of preparedness work. Taiwan sits on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity along the Pacific Rim, and — much like neighboring Japan — has a long history of catastrophic quakes. How does April 3 compare with other recent quakes? The April 3 earthquake, which measured 7.4 on the moment magnitude scale, was felt across Taiwan. It was the most severe since a 7.6 magnitude quake in 1999 killed
A: Artificial intelligence technology has been causing controversy lately: a student was caught cheating with AI to win the grand prize in an art contest. B: That’s so absurd. Does this mean that AI paints better than humans? A: Maybe. Luckily, the student was later disqualified. B: And more absurdly, it’s becoming more and more popular to use AI technology to “resurrect” people. A: Yeah, some netizens even posted videos featuring the late singer CoCo Lee, who was “resurrected” by them with AI software. (By Eddy Chang, Taipei Times/台北時報張聖恩)
Around the time of the Dragon Boat Festival in June, the streets of Taiwan are filled with the delightful aroma of zongzi, a traditional snack made of sticky rice wrapped in leaves. The leaves are folded into a cone and then filled with sticky rice and other ingredients such as braised pork belly, peanuts and salted duck egg yolks. The filled leaves are then tightly tied with kitchen twine and ready for cooking. Dragon Boat Festival (n. phr.) 端午節 aroma
It’s another school day with the same ritual. You wake up to your smartphone’s alarm, scroll through messages during your commute, and listen to your favorite playlist with your wireless earbuds between classes. These devices, integrated smoothly into your daily routine, certainly make life more convenient. However, where do these devices end up after you replace them? In fact, the issue of electronic waste is a growing global concern. According to the United Nations, in 2019 alone, we generated an astonishing 53.6 million tons of e-waste—an average of 7.3kg per person. Projections hint at the figure soaring to 110
