A closer look
Located in the west Pacific Ocean the Philippines has a rich and varied cultural past. It is believed that there is a shared Austronesian heritage between the Philippines and Taiwan. The islands were also a Spanish colony for 300 years, in fact, the name is derived from the Spanish King Phillip II. As well as converting the vast majority of the Filappinos to Catholicism, the Spanish (ruling through Mexico) are said to have left behind an Hispanic strength of emotion and passion, and cuisine. After struggling for independence in 1898 the Philippines became an American colony, which left a legacy of widely spoken English. Finally after World War II (and the Japanese occupation) ended, the Philippines finally gained indepdence.
Nowadays the Philippines are renowned for their growing tourist industry, the sheer amount of islands means that travellers prepared to cycle or hike off the beaten track can find numerous hidden gems. For those into watersports, the Philippines is home to some world-famous surfing waves, such as Cloud 9. From swimming with whale sharks in Donsol to exploring nineteenth century wrecks in Subic Bay the underwater activities are varied. Some of the best scuba diving in the world can be found in the often pristine waters around the islands.

WHO KNEW?
Some pretty famous movies set in Vietnam were actually filmed in the Philippines, such as Apocalpse Now and Platoon. The Philippines was chosen because there is some similarity in the terrain. However it isn't the only example of the Philippines masquerading as another country - Brokedown Palace, a story set in Thailand was also filmed there as the subject matter of the film was too controversial for it to be filmed in Thailand. Even more surprisingly Thirteen Days, a movie set in Cuba was filmed on the islands. The film didn't rely on special effects, just the similarities between the two landscapes. Much of the filming took place in the Pagsanjan jungle.

South Korea’s famous kimchi is falling victim to climate change, with scientists, farmers and manufacturers saying the quality and quantity of the napa cabbage that is pickled to make the ubiquitous dish is suffering due to rising temperatures. Napa cabbage thrives in cooler climates, and is usually planted in mountainous regions where temperatures during the key growing summer season once rarely rose above 25 degrees Celsius. Studies show that warmer weather brought about by climate change is now threatening these crops, so much so that South Korea might not be able to grow napa cabbage one day due to the intensifying heat. “We
On blazing hot summer days, fresh ingredients and cool refreshments straight from a refrigerator feel like nothing short of a miracle. However, chilled foods didn’t begin with modern refrigerators. In fact, the origin of refrigeration precedes the invention of this now-indispensable appliance by centuries. Initially, the quest for refrigeration was motivated more by the desire to cool beverages than to preserve food. The ancient Greeks and Romans, for instance, used snow stored in insulated pits to chill wine. Around the fourth century BC, the Persians made a significant stride in refrigeration techniques when they devised the yakhchal. Fashioned from

Historically, items that require physical manipulation have been designed for right-handed use. For example, tools like scissors and musical instruments are often constructed with right-handers in mind, making it difficult for left-handers to use them. __4__ While these factors offer some explanation, they remain speculative. The precise reasons for the global prevalence of right-handed people continue to be debated. Nevertheless, left-handedness will remain a phenomenon of great curiosity among scientists and researchers for many years to come. What Did You Learn?
