A Malaysian farm has adopted the Japanese traditional art of cattle pampering — with an Islamic twist.
Prime steer and lambs raised by the company Bif Dagang get daily massages to reduce stress, padded flooring to protect their knees, three baths a day to cool down and a special diet of softened corn and barley that is easily chewed and digested.
The method is similar to Japanese rearing of its Wagyu cattle, which produces the prized Kobe beef.
But instead of beer or sake to stimulate their appetite, Bif Dagang — an ethnic Malay-owned company — gives its cattle 100-Plus brand soft drinks to ensure the meat produced is halal, or acceptable under Islamic dietary rules.
The Japanese feed their top-grade Wagyu cattle with sake.
"We give them 100-Plus to whet their appetite," Bif Dagang's managing director Mohamad Rosdi Mustapha said.
"We also plan to build air-conditioned enclosures for our pampered livestock."
The intent of the coddling is to raise cattle with flesh that is highly marbled with small, finely interspersed flecks of fat to enhances its flavor, tenderness and juiciness.
Rosdi said that a US study showed genes contributed 37 percent to high marbling in cattle while a conducive environment plays a larger role, accounting for 63 percent.
"In this business, it takes science and real art to produce high quality halal beef," he added.
The company's Web site said Bif Dagang aims to "revolutionize the Malaysian livestock and meat production industry and to put Malaysia on the high quality beef producer world map." (AP)

不過由馬來人經營的Bif Dagang公司不是用啤酒或清酒來刺激牛隻的食慾，而是餵牠們喝「100-Plus」碳酸飲料，以確保生產的肉類合乎伊斯蘭律法。

Bif Dagang的總經理穆罕默德．羅斯帝．穆塔法說︰「我們用100-Plus來增進牛隻食慾。」

如此細心照料的目的在飼養油花分布細緻均勻的牛隻，提升肉質的風味及鮮嫩多汁的程度。
羅斯帝表示，美國一項研究顯示，培育油花分布均勻的上等牛隻37%是靠基因，而提供舒適環境則扮演更重要的角色，佔63%。
他進一步說︰「這一行中，想要生產高品質且合乎伊斯蘭律法的牛肉，就得靠科學及真正的技術。」
