Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was arrested yesterday by troops ahead of a controversial constitutional referendum, a top government aide said.

¡§Troops have taken the president from his home to the air force [base],¡¨ said Enrique Reina, the president¡¦s personal secretary.

Elected for a non-renewable four-year term in 2006, Zelaya had planned a vote yesterday asking Hondurans to sanction a future referendum to allow him to run for re-election.

The referendum was ruled illegal by the country¡¦s top court and was opposed by the military. Commanders refused to distribute ballot boxes for yesterday¡¦s vote.

President Ma Ying-jeou (°¨^¤E) is scheduled to start a visit to Central America, including Honduras, today. When contacted for comment last night, the Presidential Office said that Ma¡¦s plans remained unchanged.
