First lady Wu Shu-jen (§d²Q¬Ã) will be treated as the wife of a national leader and will be protected as such when she visits the US next week, a close friend of the first family said on Friday.
Hung Shun-wu (¬x¶¶¤), a former National Assembly member of the Democratic Progressive Party, said that Wu is scheduled to travel to San Francisco to attend her son's graduation from the University of California at Berkeley.
Chen Chih-chung (³¯P¤¤) will receive a master's degree in law.
Wu is scheduled to arrive in the US on Wednesday or Thursday, Hung said, adding that arrangements for the first lady's safety will be at the same level as they were for Vice President Annette Lu's (§f¨q½¬) last transit stops in the US on her trip to Central America in March.
The first lady will attend a banquet given by Taiwanese expatriates in San Francisco in her honor next Sunday before returning home the following day.
