VIEW THIS PAGE A great weekend out of town can include a variety of elements: going to see live bands, hearing wicked DJs, heading to a new bar, or going camping, getting back to nature, and enjoying swimming pools and hot tubs. It¡¦s rare to have all these options at once, but that is what Perpetual Motion has done.
The Lost Lagoon Weekend 10/10 Getaway in Wulai, starting tonight and ending Sunday, is a chance to have it all.
When organizer Chad Ordoyne took his girlfriend for a romantic night out of town, the last thing he expected was for it to snowball into a huge event: ¡§We got out there and it was so beautiful we ended up booking the cabin for a second night and canceling our other plans,¡¨ he said in an interview last week. As they explored the Dana Resort (¤j¯Ç¹A³õ), the potential began to dawn on him. ¡§I thought, oh, this is a great place, and I want to have a party here.¡¨
He drew a map on the table in beer to illustrate: ¡§It¡¦s a long property built along the river with another river feeding into it. All over you can hear water running. The only neighbors are your mountains rising up all around it, and cascading waterfalls.¡¨
Ordoyne, who hails from New Orleans, said, ¡§The ideas I have, they might not be new to New Orleans but they haven¡¦t been done here. New Orleans style is a way to incorporate music, entertainment, good food, and create an environment that encourages people to talk to people they don¡¦t know.¡¨
He and partner Tristan Newman have planned activities to get people talking: you¡¦ll be given a number at the door that matches someone else¡¦s; if you find that person you both get a free drink. ¡§Kind of a new take on the old line, ¡¥Hey! Can I get your number?¡¦¡¨ Ordoyne said.
There will be a ¡§tequila volleyball¡¨ game in the afternoon, but the biggest draw is the music, with 10 DJs and 18 bands from Taipei, Taichung, Chaiyi, Chunghua and Tainan. A close second is the venue itself: mud-free camping areas covered by tents, three pools, a giant hot spring pool near the DJ booth that can hold 50 people, and private hot tub areas (all at no extra charge). Ordoyne went back during a rainstorm to check it out and said there is room for 600 to 700 people to dance and camp without getting wet. ¡§You can stay dry almost everywhere but in the pool,¡¨ he said.
Amenities include a 24-hour bar with free water, a full Taiwanese seafood restaurant, hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers until 2am, free showers and public restrooms. With garbage/recycling bins and ashtray stands everywhere, ¡§You¡¦d have to be a real asshole to litter,¡¨ Ordoyne said. Only name-brand spirits will be served: Bacardi, Beefeater, Absolute, Jagermeister and Jim Beam.
All that pales though, compared to the band lineup which includes Double Wide, Coach (±Ð¤÷), Johnny Fat Stacks, Public Radio, Pan Africana, Money Shot Horns, 88 Balaz (88ÁûªÝ¼Ö¬ó), THC, Rabbit is Rich (¨ß¤l«Ü¦³¿ú) and The Deadly Vibes.
Ordoyne enlisted DJ Marcus Aurelius to put together a crew of 10 DJs with acts including Taimaica Sound Crew, JR and Megan, Fratzuki, Antihero, Hooker and Schism. Music will end at 4am to give people a chance to rest up for the next day.
Grab your swimsuit, tent and dancing shoes, it¡¦s time to get wet, wicked and wild in Wulai.¡X Alita Rickards
