Absinthe brings out inner artist

Taipei venues serve the legendary drink though other major cities have stopped the flow of the green liquid

By Susan Kendzulak  /  CONTRIBUTING REPORTER

The green honeymoon ended as absinthe was banned in Belgium (1905), Switzerland (1908), the US (1912) and France (1915). Once banned, companies such as Pernod produced lower alcohol licorice-flavored drinks that did not contain wormwood and which go by the names anis, anisette, pastis, ouzo and raki.

Even though the jury is still out regarding the famed drink's hallucinatory psychoactive qualities, it will indeed provide the imbiber with a deep feeling of euphoria, a heightened lucidness and a peaceful sense of oneness with the world.
