At the 3rd annual Dream Carnival tomorrow we are promised an abundance of magical sights which are intended to inspire us to become creative and according to the organizers make "universal art in an urban community."
The lofty aim is to create new values as society teeters, poised between tradition and technology, art and commerce and other similar societal dualities.
Twelve artists from Canada and the US (plus two kite flyers from France) have been plucked to participate in the Dream Carnival, which takes place from 2pm to 7pm, starting at the Dream Community in Hsichih, at the intersection of Chungshing Road and Huchien Street (汐止中興路湖前街口), from where it will head to Dahu Lake Park in Neihu.
Here a Dream Pageant will be held, with music, dancing, magic, fire lights and a series of excitiing performances. "Get ready for a crazy and surreal parade," the organizers' promotional literature says.
"You don't need to spend lots of pennies to learn how to be a great artist. Great art is cheap! Just come join us and and brainstorm with artists around the world."
Sonia Telesco, the creative director of Dream Community says giant puppets, large floats, acrobats, aerialists and original ideas "mocking the public media" will be features of the event. "Quite naturally people's inner talents will come out," she says. There will also be workshops and discussion groups connected with the event at the Dream Community site.
Dream Community was founded by Gordon Tsai (蔡聰明), who converted his farm in Hsichih into an international arts and culture exchange center. There is also a restaurant with good international food.
The organizers say this will be the largest carnival parade in Taipei, which is a coincidence, because another "biggest parade ever" to celebrate 120 years since the founding of the city's walls is taking place on Sunday.
So, shake off your apathy and make it out to Hsichih. Release those creative energies.
