Xiaomi founder arrives in Taipei for conference

The founder and chief executive of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp (小米) arrived in Taiwan yesterday to attend the cross-strait Mobile Internet Conference.

Lei Jun (雷軍), 45, is set to deliver a 40-minute keynote speech at the one-day conference today addressing how “smart homes” are expected to lead to innovation.

The meeting, set to take place at the Taipei International Convention Center, is expected to draw business leaders from Taiwan and China.

Among Taiwanese executives expected at the conference is scheduled panelist Richard Lee (李詩欽), chairman of Inventec Corp (英業達), a major assembly partner of Xiaomi smartphones and Foxconn Technology Group (富士康科技集團).

After his second visit to Taiwan, Lei is expected to return to Beijing this afternoon to prepare for a news conference set for Thursday at which Xiaomi is expected to launch its flagship products for this year.

Xiaomi became the world’s No. 3 smartphone maker in the third quarter of last year behind Samsung Electronics Co and Apple Inc, according to research firm IDC.
