Shipments to rise: report

The worldwide laptop computer market is performing better than expected and should grow in the second quarter because of Microsoft ending its support of Windows XP, TrendForce Corp said in a report on Tuesday. TrendForce said global shipments of laptops would decline by only 1 to 2 percent this year and should grow 2.8 percent next year and 3.6 percent in 2016.

LCD TV shipments increase

Shipments by Taiwanese contract LCD TV makers for the first quarter of the year rose 1.9 percent from a year earlier to 7.61 million units, WitsView said in a report on Monday. WitsView said shipments for this quarter will increase 31.4 percent quarter-on-quarter to about 10 million units, and the number is expected to be between 37 million and 38 million units this year, compared with 35.86 million units last year.

MediaTek ranked fourth

MediaTek Inc (聯發科) was the world’s fourth-largest fabless integrated circuit supplier last year with US$4.59 billion (US$152.3 million) in revenue, up one notch from the previous year, IC Insights said on Saturday. Smartphone chip developer Qualcomm Inc remained the world’s largest IC designer with US$17.21 billion in revenue last year, followed by Broadcom Corp with US$8.22 billion and Advanced Micro Devices Inc with US$5.3 billion, IC Insights said.
